AP Studio Art project that needed to show two figures in a room. This was my first piece of the year.

I wanted a piece that would originally make the viewer think, "Aww, how cute," but then upon deeper inspection realise the seriousness of the piece. The little girl is safely in the arms of her huge, ogre-like imaginary friend, happily watching TV. I wanted this guy to seem huge in the gentle giant kind of way (and no, he is not Shrek OR Yoda, he's my special ogre). If you look around the room you see the dirtiness the girl is living in. The couch is torn up, the carpet and walls seem dirty and old, there are beer cans strewn across the floor, and her mother is in the backroom smoking. The girl is being ignored and pushed aside, so she has to turn to her imagination to give her a companion. I hoped to convey the type of loniless some kids can feel when they're neglected.

This is very powerful! The juxtaposition of the happiness of the girl and her ogre with the shabbiness of the rest of the room, and the obvious despair of the figure we see through the door way is stark and emotionally powerful.

I really like how the orc brings a kindness, and brightness to a picture that otherwise would have been dark, and gloomy.

I'm glad you like it. I think I like the concept more than the piece, but hey, what are you going to do XP

hmm.. very nice composition... however I missed some of the things you'de like the viewer to pick up on from your description... the pic does look cute at first, then eirily weird... however few things might be done better to convey what you want, the floor does look dirty but those cans laying around aren't reconizable as beer cans at all, the walls could be more delapidated as well (the little crack could look more like a big crack whioch might make it more readable too), the smoking mother is a nice touch but I didn't read it this way... I thought the figure is obviosuly the ogre's wife but I didn't think the little girl was of relations at all... I wonder how u could make that clear through the pic... um last thing- the girl looks contented... from your description I think you should have her helplessly reaching for that bear dwn there since she is being ignored and pushed aside......

Thanks for the suggestions. I thought your interpretation of the wife as the ogre's wife was interesting, I hadn't heard that before. And I wanted the girl to look content because she found love in the arms of her imaginary friend, as in that's the only way she can be content. But thanks for the suggestions, I agree with you about the wall, it could have been made more delapitated.

I think the beers would be the most important thing to change though- as an avid beer drinker- I still would have never read those as beer cans...
